Estimating Soil Erosion to Highlight Potential Areas for Conservation Priority in Rukarara Catchment, South-western Rwanda

چکیده

Soil erosion is one of the major environmental problems in tropical ecosystems; however, lack information on amount eroded soils Rwandan mountainous watersheds hinders effective decision-making toward sustainable soil management. This study aimed at predicting Rukarara River watershed, Rwanda, and identifying potential areas high risk using revised universal loss equation (RUSLE) implemented a GIS environment. The annual was estimated by computing performing spatial overlay analysis relevant layers including rainfall erosivity (R), erodability (K), slope length steepness (LS), cover management (C), conservation practice (P) factors. results indicate that varies from 54 to 134 t ha−1 year−1 (95% confidence interval) with mean 39.96 year−1. area generally characterized very low classes correlated literature tropics. Agricultural lands are hotspots 61.29 produced maps estimates can facilitate informed especially watershed.

USLE-Based Assessment of Soil Erosion by Water in the Nyabarongo River Catchment, Rwanda

Soil erosion has become a serious problem in recent decades due to unhalted trends of unsustainable land use practices. Assessment of soil erosion is a prominent tool in planning and conservation of soil and water resource ecosystems. The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was applied to Nyabarongo River Catchment that drains about 8413.75 km² (33%) of the total Rwanda coverage and a small par...

Estimating vegetation parameter for soil erosion assessment in an alpine catchment by means of QuickBird imagery

Soil erosion rates in alpine regions are related to high spatial variability complicating assessment of risk and damages. A crucial parameter triggering soil erosion that can be derived from satellite imagery is fractional vegetation cover (FVC). The objective of this study is to assess the applicability of normalized differenced vegetation index (NDVI), linear spectral unmixing (LSU) andmixtur...

Uncertainties of Two Methods in Selecting Priority Areas for Protecting Soil Conservation Service at Regional Scale

Soil conservation (SC) is an important ecosystem regulating service. At present, methods for SC mapping to identify priority areas are primarily based on empirical soil erosion models, such as the RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) based model. However, the parameters of the empirical soil conservation model are based on long-term observations of field experiments at small spatial sca...
